Functional medicine strategies for kidney health that doctors don’t discuss

Alright, we’ve talked about how kidney disease sneaks up on you, how diet and lifestyle can slow it down, and why waiting for symptoms is like waiting for a storm to hit before fixing the roof. Now, we’re going deeper because you need to know you have options.
And that there’s more to protecting your kidneys than taking medications and hoping for the best. If you learn nothing else from this series, know that the kidneys are not an island and function better within a collaborative environment.
Conventional medicine does a great job at diagnosing and managing kidney disease, but it falls short when it comes to actually healing your body and getting to the root cause or causes. There are many reasons for this, but the key is time deficit.
That’s where functional medicine steps in, to look at the whole person and address the often ugly and disastrous root cause, not just the symptoms.
It’s time to stop playing defense and start taking control.
Heal your gut, heal your kidneys
Your gut and kidneys? They’re in this together. When your gut health is off, inflammation skyrockets, toxins build up, and your kidneys end up taking the hit. Leaky gut and an unhealthy microbiome can make kidney disease worse.
You can do this a variety of ways, but the gist is feed the good microbes, reduce the amount of processed foods in your diet, and support your digestion.
Here’s a few ways you can help your gut be better, so it can support the rest of your body.
- Feed the good bacteria. Probiotic-rich foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, and yogurt help balance your gut microbiome.
- Ditch processed foods. Artificial additives and preservatives wreak havoc on your gut and kidneys.
- Support digestion with prebiotic foods. Garlic, onions, and bananas help fuel good bacteria that reduce inflammation.
- Consider digestive enzymes. If your gut struggles to break down food, enzymes can help ease the burden on your kidneys.
Why this matters?
Gut Health & CKD
It’s now known the gut microbiome is altered in kidney disease and the resultant dysbiosis (imbalance of gut bacteria) contributes to the progression of CKD.
Intermittent fasting is good for your kidneys too
Your kidneys work 24/7. They never get a break. But intermittent fasting (IF) can change the game. Giving your body a break from digestion allows it to repair and clear out toxins. Remember digestion only effectively occurs in a state of rest.
Intermittent fasting isn’t a new thing, and it should not be considered a fad or trend but a lifesaving habit that serves the body in many, many, many ways.
Start with a 12-hour fast
If you eat dinner at 7 PM, don’t eat again until 7 AM.
Work up to 16:8
Fasting for 16 hours and eating within an 8-hour window can improve insulin sensitivity and reduce kidney stress.
Hydrate like it’s your job
Drink water, herbal teas, and electrolyte-rich drinks to support kidney function while fasting.
Sauna Therapy—Sweat Out the Toxins
Your skin is your largest detox organ, and when your kidneys are struggling, sweating can help lighten the load. Infrared sauna therapy helps release toxins through sweat instead of forcing your kidneys to filter them.
- Just 15–30 minutes, 3 times a week can reduce inflammation and improve circulation.
- Pair with hydration. Always drink plenty of water before and after a session.
- If a sauna isn’t an option, try hot baths with Epsom salt to promote detoxification.
Use Targeted Herbs and Supplements
Nature has given us powerful tools to support kidney health. While pharmaceuticals focus on managing symptoms, herbs and supplements can help repair and protect.
- Astragalus – A powerhouse for kidney support and immune function.
- Berberine – Helps regulate blood sugar, reducing kidney damage in diabetics.
- Curcumin (Turmeric) – Fights inflammation and oxidative stress.
- Alpha-lipoic acid – Supports nerve and kidney health by reducing oxidative stress.
- Dandelion Root Tea – Acts as a natural diuretic, helping your kidneys flush out toxins.
Mind-Body Medicine—The Missing Link
Your stress levels are directly tied to your kidney health. Chronic stress raises cortisol, spikes blood pressure, and keeps your body in a constant state of inflammation. If you’re not managing stress, you’re not managing kidney disease.
- Meditation and breathwork – Just 10 minutes a day can lower stress and inflammation.
- Yoga and Tai Chi – Low-impact movement that supports circulation and kidney function.
- Acupuncture – Can improve kidney energy flow and promote healing.
You have more power than you think
Here’s the truth: you don’t have to wait until things get worse to take action. Functional medicine is about taking control now, before you’re staring down dialysis or a transplant.
Every meal, every choice, every habit—it’s either healing you or harming you. What will you choose?
What’s Next…
This isn’t the end of the conversation—it’s just the beginning. If this series opened your eyes to new possibilities, share it with someone who needs to hear it. Because knowledge is power, but action is everything.
